Well, I don't know. Alsa seems is OK.
Try Rosegarden (I use and maybe can help
you). Rosegarden edit midi files. What happens?
Timidity is sequencer+softsynth:
midi out (sequencer) --> softsynth --> output audio in only one tool.
You don't want audacity. Run:
# apt-cache show audacity
# apt-cache show pmidi
# apt-cache show rosegarden
