Kdeprint refuse to use cups as printing system saying that he cannot

Some applications (firefox, openoffice) don't print and see only a
"generic printer" instead of the printer's list.
Any hint?
What about the programs that come along with cups (like lpq, lp or lpr).
Do they work as expected or do they have the same problems?
