The nice thing with grub is it has a nice command line that will let you boot anything even if it's not in the configuration file. I recommend you print your current /boot/grub/menu.lst on paper (having it printed will help if you end up needing to boot by hand), study it and read "man update-grub". Also make a copy of this file under another name in case it is overwritten during install. It's not unlikely you'll have to tweak menu.lst by hand in the end. Any problem should be recoverable*, so chose a day when you know you have some free time you can use for a possible recovery and go ahead.
