All, I have problems with Skype too. Does anyone know of a good open-source VoIP program that will let me talk with my cousin in the U.S. who uses Windows? I believe both of us are behind firewalls. I prefer not to open up any ports, but am willing to; I do not think my cousin can. I am looking for a Linux app for me and an easy-to-use Windows app for my cousin.
I looked briefly at GnomeMeeting (Ekiga) but GnomeMeeting's setup wizard tells me my STUN status is "blocked" (i.e. it could not communicate with the STUN server). The app stun(1) from Debian package stun says the same. I am willing to open a port or two but cannot open a range of ports; my SMC router won't let me open more than 20 ports, it seems. I get the same problem in Skype too. Instead of alsaconf, try one of the following: 1. Reboot your PC 2. Or, quit skype. Then: Type these four commands: sudo /etc/init.d/alsa unload sudo /etc/init.d/alsa reload sudo /etc/init.d/udev unload sudo /etc/init.d/udev reload Then start skype again. 3. Or, try starting skype from a bash prompt like this: aoss skype & 4. Or, switch to Gnome?? (I have not tried this. I don't know if it will work.) Also, in all 3 cases, make sure that KDE's aRts sound server is set to quit after 5 seconds of inactivity. The setting is somewhere in kcontrol.
