No, dexconf - whatever it is - had no effect. There is no man page, dpkg and apt-cache search know nothing about it but it is in /usr/bin so I just entered the bare command dexconf. The command prompt came back immediately and I ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg with the same result previously reported.
