Depends on the hardware. It *does* stress the on-board power regulator a damn great deal if you do it on a power-hungry desktop CPU. The acoustic noise I mentioned are caused by interference of the electric noise it generates on insuficiently protected audio circuitry. Yes, I have seen this first hand on some ThinkPads. My T43 doesn't appreciate ondemand much, for example... It is probably not good for the battery of a laptop either.
