Well documented by now. I was getting:

Setting up ALSA...ALSA lib control.c:816:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid
CTL hw:0
...
Then I replaced libasound2 1.0.11-6 with -3 because -4 is nowhere to be
found.
Still no sound.
Then I did in sequence an /etc/init.d/alsa-utils
restart
reset
restart
And behold we have sound.
Which of these flailings did it? Who knows. ;-)
I'll report when it fails again at reboot eventually.
