I am grasping at straws now, but you could try (as root)
update-fonts-dir misc Type1 100dpi 75dpi
Then try the update-font-aliases command again:
update-fonts-alias misc Type1 100dpi 75dpi
(Note: Do not specify the full paths to the font directories for these
two commands; see also their manpages.)
