Sounds like the problem (and workaround) described here:

It does.  So I did "touch ~/.mplayer/default.sub" and it _improved_ my ability to watch Daily Show videos at comedycentral.com.  Now, I guess, my problems are with buffering and bandwidth, becuase they still don't play through - but at least they start!
