Take a look at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Time_and_time_zone_settings
This says that the TZ can be checked from the javascript console, but
that it must be changed through the OS. The problem with this is that
the OS says that the box is set to PDT:

   Wed May 10 12:59:06 PDT 2006

and the javascript console from Firefox and Thunderbird both say that
they are using EDT:

   Wed May 10 2006 15:58:52 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Obviously, somewhere, something is confused. Is there some place other
than /etc/timezone that the Mozilla products could be picking up their
information?

Have you checked if the TZ variable is set somewhere when you log in?
No, it is not. No mention of TZ in the environment.

I tried setting the TZ in the environment. Then I restarted Thunderbird and all was fine. But since I changed the TZ in an xterm and ran Thunderbird from my fvwm menus the changed TZ was not used. This was when I remembered that at some point my TZ in /etc/timezone had gotted changed (I don't know how) and I had reset it to US/Pacific. I am betting that neither Thunderbird, nor Firefox had been restarted since then. I restarted Firefox after thinking of this and it is now showing the correct time, as well.

No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There's always a boom tomorrow.
What?! Look, somebody's got to have some damn perspective around here.
Boom. Sooner or later ... boom!
