I've had good success with dvdrip, though I use it slightly differently. I'm ripping my dvd's and saving them as .avi's on my file server for easier watching in myth :) I have had a couple of occasions where it SEEMS to freeze my interface, but that wasn't actually the case, it was just so CPU-hoggish that everything else ground to a halt.
