Yes. You can mount an ext3 system as an ext2 without missing a bit, *EXCEPT* for what is in the journal. If the ext3 partition was not unmounted cleanly, data will be lost.

Make that "data may be lost". And if an ext3 file system (not partition)
is mounted as ext3 you still have "data may be lost".
