No, I can't ;-)
I had some problems with firestarter, so I decided to write my own
iptables script.
I'd suspect that one of your network interfaces is not available when
the /etc/init.d/firestarter is invoked. That would cause the script to
generate an error and possibly abort.
I only have eth0 used for the interface. Firestarter is set on that too. Does
/etc/init.d/firestarter need another interface to use? How should I do that?
The GUI configuration tool will let you change that. I'm not
knowledgeable about firestarter, but the GUI should make it easy to
configure the firewall.
Another possibility is that some of the modules you need for iptables
aren't loaded by the time firestarter wants to start. [...]
I'm still new on Debian. You are talking something I really don't familiar.:(
So
what is iptables and how to use it? How to check it for problem? I would be
grateful to get the inside knoledge from you. Thanks!
Some years ago I downloaded an iptables tutorial from the Internet, but
I didn't copy it over when I installed my new Debian system.
But it looks like you can find some good iptables tutorials here:
http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=UTF-8&fr=sfp&p=iptables+tutorial
You can probably also turn on bootloging to see what, if any, error
message firestarter spits out on bootup.
Have to ask again, how to do this? [...]
First, you might not have to turn on boot-logging. If you boot into text
mode, you can use Shift+PageUp to see the boot messages.
But if that won't work, look at /etc/default/bootlogd and think about
changing the value there.
