Using two package manages (dpkg and rpm) on one system is a horribly bad idea. They won't know about each other and one will happily overwrite or remove files that the other thought it was managing. The chances of this breaking your system are high. To avoid this, Debian's rpm package makes a point of not allowing packages to be installed by default. -- see shy jo
