Thanks!  This works for me:
-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Selected with 'xfontsel -print' for visual selection.

With your useful explanation about GTK1 and GTK2 I've remembered one identical 
issue about font problems in my old ubuntu, sorry %-)
