The existing entry is a symlink to the above fonts directory and making it a direct pointer does not help.
To make matters worse, I tried to fix things by reinstalling some xorg packages and now startx complains that it cannot move /var/log/Xorg.0.log to /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old. This is very bad. I'd purge the whole of xorg and start again if I knew which packages to purge.
