I had problems switching to console with CTRL+ALT+F1 and all I had to
do was install the package 'xkb-data'.

Do you have it installed?

P.S. I hope I'm addressing the right issue as I didn't watch this
thread from the beginning, only when my Xorg broke as well ;)
