In theory you could just change your apt sources and do a dist-upgrade. In practice that would probably cause your computer to explode. Ubuntu is mostly source compatible with Debian, but not binary compatible.
It is possible to move a running Linux system from one distro to another. I've a friend who went from Red Hat 7 to Debian Woody on a live system without a proper reinstall, just installing everything over itself via apt and then fixing all of the boot scripts. I do not recommend it, however. :-) Just backup your personal data and do a proper reinstall. You'll learn more about "underlying Debian basics" that way anyway. -- Larry Garfield On Thu, April 13, 2006 2:38 pm, Chris Dunn said: > I'm coming to Debian via Ubuntu. > > Ubuntu (Breezy Badger) mightily impressed me after struggling for > several years and never quite succeeding with Slackware. > > I'd now like to remove the fluff, and get to the underlying Debian > basics. > > Is there any established method for moving from Ubuntu to Debian Testing > without doing a complete new installation of Debian? > > Chris Dunn -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
