From a quick look at the package respository it looks as if bzip2 and smb support was bundled with libgnomevfs2-common in sarge. Was there any notification of this difference when doing a dist-upgrade? I can't remember, but it migth be an idea to mention this as part of the package config for libgnomevfs2-common or in upgrade instructions or somewhere..
