Hi Matthew, This to me is misleading. I dont like to say Etch/testing and Etch/stable, it is a confusing notion. I like to know that 'Woody' or 'Sarge' are released version of Debian. 'Etch' is not, you have to 'clarify' that its 'Etch/testing' vs 'Etch/stable' or what I will call 'Etch'. The OP said he installed 'Etch'. That is not the same as saying you installed 'Sarge' because 'Etch' is not released. Anyway, I know what I am talking about and you do.
