My last go around with the network issue was: http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2006/02/msg03262.html : don't know about the issue of it conflicting with the firewire controller though. If one or both of them is a card then you could try moving them to another slot. Or is there something on the firewire that is getting an eth assignment?
