That is the normal installation.

Ok. so you have installed everything you need.

Ok. This happends when you have not setup your Video correctly. You need
to fix that.

You CAN use your system with text and console utilities: vi, emacs,
mutt, links, .. So you can do many things. If you want to get your X
windows setup, give us some info to help you. 1) what is the output of
'lspci -v' 2) what install did you use: net-installer, sarge cd... 3)
are you using Xfree86 or Xorg? 4) any errors or warningins in
/var/log/XFree.0.log or /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
