But it's not an ATA drive, it's a USB drive. Both the DVD-RW and CD-RW even point to the same device: $ ls -l /dev/*rw lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2006-03-09 11:04 /dev/cdrw -> scd0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2006-03-09 11:04 /dev/dvdrw -> scd0 so it doesn't explain why one works and the other doesn't, except that burning DVDs doesn't use cdrecord.
