Debian friends, I'm running Linux 2.6.15-1-686 i686 (testing) with KDE 3.5.1 and udev 0.085-1 dbus 0.60-6 hal 0.5.6-4 and do not get any icons showing removable usb media, like before, since some time.
After reboot: Nothing in dmesg/syslog concerning neither udev, dbus, nor hal. No icon shows up when the usb disk is connected (it used to!). Mounting through Konqueror does function, though the Konqueror icon is not changed to the mounted version. But it is mounted, since I can use it with no problem (the mounting is done, like always, according to entries in fstab). Florian (see blow) recommended invoke-rc.d udev restart invoke-rc.d dbus restart invoke-rc.d kdm restart (after stopping kdm) This did not change the "icon behaviour". But else, all seems in good order: Still nothing in syslog concerning neither udev, dbus, nor hal. Can there be some influence of how am-utils 6.1.3-2 is configured? I'd appreciate any suggestion, thanks on beforehand! My first questions) Subject: Removable media From: Tore Ericsson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear Florian, In http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2006/02/msg00601.html you wrote: ... If you want to get rid of the icons on the desktop, you can uncheck the corresponding option(s) in "K-menu > Control Center > Desktop > Behavior > Device Icons". The default actions for different types pluggable media can be set to "Do Nothing" in "K-menu > Control Center > Peripherals > Storage Media". If you want to disable the media notifier daemon, then see "K-menu > Control Center > KDE Components > Service Manager". ... Now my problem is about reversed (except the automount issue, let's ignore that for the moment or maybe forever). My desktop icons for removable media don't show up any longer after some upgrades (also kernel 2.6 upgrade) recently. I'm now running Linux 2.6.15-1-686 i686, and all is about OK except this little deficit. Earlier, the usb-devices in question (see Appendix) were properly showing up with three icons corresponding to sda1--3 labelled by fstab and marked unmounted. The "Control Center > Desktop > Behavior > Device Icons" are properly checked, and I have seen this working as expected, earlier. However, I have never touched the "Control Center > KDE Components > Service Manager" before, and it is a bit cryptic to me. How is this supposed to work and be used? Sorry to bother, but I would much appreciate your advice! Tore P.S. In case you think this is enough significant to be shown in a Debian mailinglist, please do so, but send cc to me! Florian's response) Subject: Re: Removable media Date: Saturday 11 March 2006 17:37 From: Florian Kulzer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Tore Ericsson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dear Tore, It seems to me that upgrades to udev, hal and/or dbus are still a bit shaky and often break things. I think this is because the installation scripts do not restart all the components which have to collaborate to make the icons show up. (The kernel upgrade is probably unrelated to this problem, unless you changed something about the initrd and modules configuration.) So far the following has always worked for me to bring the icons back: Log out from KDE, log in on a text console, acquire root privileges and restart everything, i.e. invoke-rc.d udev restart invoke-rc.d dbus restart invoke-rc.d kdm restart Then log in to KDE again and see if it works. If it does not work post the error messages from the above commands (if any) and the relevant parts of dmesg and syslog. Also include the version numbers of udev, dbus and hal on your system. Please use the list for that; you will be cc'd if you ask for it.
