I once had this exact same problem, and solved it by not loading the APM
module until after I had exited X (i.e. when I was about to halt the
system).
The nVidia drivers and apm don't seem to be able to be loaded at the
same time without freezing the system, I'm afraid. I reported it here
when I discovered it, but I haven't followed up to see if any fixes were
made to either program.
