I am trying to install kernel 2.4.18-1-686 on Woody installation and for some reason it doesn't boot correctly. Mainly, many modules aren't detected, including the 3Com 3c59x card. This is an older Dell Optiplex GX1 (Pentium Pro). This machine works fine with the 2.2.20-idepci kernel.
I installed the kernel-images packages using dselect. Looking at initrd, it looks like in /initrd/lib/modules/2.4.18-1-686/kernel/drivers, the whole net directory is missing. Is that normal or is that part of the problem? I am pretty new to Debian and Linux but know my way around Unix. Where should I start to even look at this problem? The first thing I am going to do is to build a new kernel and see if that helps. Enclosed is my dmesg output. The last line where 3c59x got loaded was when I ran modprobe 3c59x.
