well without bothering to do any research at all... I seem to recall several people having trouble installing onto SATA drives as the installer's kernel can't see them. The work-around was to alt-f2 to virtual terminal and modprobe the appropriate kernel modules to enable the SATA drives, and then alt-f1 back to the installer and go from there. Also, try a knoppix disk, and then you could lspci and lsmod to see what all you need to make it work. YMMV.
