I have no experience with this type of audio controller myself, but
according to the 2.6 kernel sources it should be handled by the module
"snd-hda-intel". (It looks to me like this module replaces the snd-azx
of the 2.4 days.)
You could try
modprobe snd-hda-intel
invoke-rc.d alsa restart
invoke-rc.d alsa-utils restart
Maybe that will get sound working, or at least give some error messages
which will help you further with finding the problem.
