Can the dist-upgade do it for me or the chaos is waiting for me?
I know mysql would like a full export/import.
Is there anithing else?

I've done this several times and I always go back to Sarge.
If you *must* have an Etch package, install just that.
In all cases *backup* (TM) before you do it or do so on another partition.
