hotplug: called by the kernel, loads the proper driver is can run scipts udev: called by the kernel, dynamic filesystem in userspace that relies on tmpfs, lately replaces hotplug hal: makes use of udev to get the events and has lots of rules for lots of stuff, hal uses dbus to address loose clients dbus: makes sending and receiving of events possible (e.g. a bluetooth pin helper, hal and it's device management) There's not much more to it. How the seperate parts work is only important if you have to fiddle with it. However, none of this is in its final state.
