By filepicker, I meant the dialog that pops up when you want to choose
an application or when you want to save a file to the hard drive.
Reading pdf/ps files (for example journal papers) from web is a common
task for me. I search for them in google, if I find a pdf file, I
sometimes want to open it in xpdf/acroread/evince/kpdf etc., depending
on the situation. (Why I dont use a single pdf reader all the time? That
is a different story and I wont go into that.)
Now for some reason, firefox remembers only one application per file
extension. For example, let's say, it knows to open pdf files in xpdf.
Now if I want to change it to acroread, I have to go through the
filepicker dialog, which involves going through /usr/bin directory. The
moment you enter /usr/bin, it tries to load all the files in the
/usr/bin directory and the machine is not responsive for quite a bit of
time (say 30 seconds). This kind of thing does not happen in konqueror
where it can remember multiple applications for the same file extension.
I think it pretty impressive that the konqueror guys got it right.
Are you using it to browse your own machine? If so, then that's
bizarre.
The above situation does not involve using the browser as the file
manager. I just hope I was succinct enough to drive the point.
