Do you by any chance have an ~/.Xdefaults or ~/.Xresources file?
I had the same error with urxvt for a long time
"cannot open color "black "
in my .Xresources I had lines like:

| URxvt.termName: rxvt-unicode
| URxvt.foreground: black
| URxvt.background: white
| URxvt.color0: #000000
| URxvt.color1: #9e1828
| URxvt.color2: #4a7624
| URxvt.color3: #b7a632
| URxvt.color4: #414171
| URxvt.color5: #963a76
`----
But had left whitespace after the word black. Deleting this whitespace
solved my problem.
Hopefully your problem is a simple as that.
