My laptop (used Thinkpad 390 from E-bay with DOA battery) required that
the battery, even though totally dead, be in the laptop to run off of
the adaptor. Without the battery, the circuit was open. Whether this
could be harmful to the laptop, I dont know. I got a replacement
battery for it. It did not seem to hurt the laptop in the meantime,
however.
