This may be academic if you've switched to OSS, but I found that
fiddling around with the settings for XMMS and Xfce-mixer resolved the
problem. It seems a recent ALSA upgrade has changed how ALSA
recognises/labels sound devices, and this change has failed to carry
over to some applications. If you go into the settings and find the
options for selecting the sound device then you should be able to get
them working again with ALSA.
