It is not / that is the problem but /boot that causes issues with grub.

I have this installed with sarge (or etch forget which):

/dev/mapper/vg-lv     76436544  31771444  40782300  44% /
tmpfs                    95908         0     95908   0% /dev/shm
/dev/hda1                90297     11519     73961  14% /boot
