I think you can setup up gnome to use alsasink for sound and also setup the dmixer plugin to alsa to allow multiple sources for sound and thus avoid the whole problem altogether. check out http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=32063 which is obviously for ubuntu, but should work.
