It'll probably be more help if you tell him what the acronym actually stands for - ie 'Application Binary Interface'...
A quick search produced this definition from foldoc.org: The interface by which an application program gains access to operating system and other services. It should be possible to run the same compiled binary applications on any system with the right ABI. It is to a compiled binary what an API is to source code...
