Just in case anyone else has to go through this there's a couple of
extra things I'd like to add to the list above.
1) Make sure you've got non-free in your /etc/apt/source.list file or
the m-a a-i nvidia bit fails.
2) If you still get flashing disco lines when starting X after all the
above steps run the nvidia-xconfig utility and it'll sort it out the
XOrg config file for you.
