Should I have both apache and apache2 packages installed

I'm trying to debug some issues related to php and locales and I see that I have apache and apache2 packages installed. It's a bit confusing when there are two /etc/apacheX directories to configure.

I'm simply trying to get php and MySQL working so I can experiment with them and get drupal working.

So far I've had nothing but problems.
