That would depend on what you asked it to do. Most distros I have experience with will let you install grub wherever you wish, or not at all. Where it installs depends on which option you choose. If it says /dev/hda that means the MBR of the hard drive. If it says /dev/hdax, where x is a partition number, in your case 3. This would install grub on that partition, not the MBR of the hard drive. I do not install grub from new installs, just add a new entry to /boot/grub/menu.lst on your main install, hda5. That way if the new trial install doesn't work out, reformating doesn't wipe out the menu for your bootloader.
