Can anyone tell me why 'apt-cache search' doesn't find the
likes of the following:
1. xv - John Bradley's X image viewer/manipulator..
I can't speak to that one. I only vaguely recall that such an app
existed. I tend to stay away from the base-x apps that don't pertain to
my having a GUI.
2. xlock - I don't use it for locking the screen, but it is
I've seen it around in a number of linux distros but only as xlockmore.
apt-get install xlockmore
a good for benchmarking x-servers because most systems have it...
3. mplayer - most players work ok with mpeg etc, but this is the
one with which I have had the most success with troublesome
formats like wmv.
There are a myriad of Media players out there. I suppose it was felt
not necessary? I'm just speculating.
But since you mention troublesome formats like wmv, you'll need
w32codecs for that. That's not going to show up in any Linux distros
archive (that I'm aware of anyway).
The answer to your problem is Christian Marillat. He's a Debian
developer. He has official and unofficial packages. The unofficial
packages are what you're looking for. For that you'll need to add his
repository to your sources.list file.
The details are at his site -> http://debian.video.free.fr/
Scroll to the bottom of the page.
You'll also want to import his GnuPG key see
http://debian.video.free.fr/faq.html for details.
