I can't speak to that one. I only vaguely recall that such an app
existed. I tend to stay away from the base-x apps that don't pertain to

There are a myriad of Media players out there. I suppose it was felt
not necessary? I'm just speculating.
But since you mention troublesome formats like wmv, you'll need
w32codecs for that. That's not going to show up in any Linux distros
archive (that I'm aware of anyway).
The answer to your problem is Christian Marillat. He's a Debian
developer. He has official and unofficial packages. The unofficial
packages are what you're looking for. For that you'll need to add his
repository to your sources.list file.
