Debian stable (up to date), stock kernel 2.6.8-2-686. The sound card is a CMI
8738 and uses alsa (snd-cmipci).

I have a new sound-card on my stable system. The card works just fine as long
as I don't try browsing my fat partitions with mc. Than the sound gets
corrupted. It gets distorted (though I use digital out) and it now has much
lower volume. The only way to get rid of this is to reboot. Reloading the
module will not help. It might work if I first start mc and access the fat
partition and then start the music. Using only the cli will not affect the
sound. I even tried 'cd /mnt/music;ls' to get as close as possible to what mc
is doing. Trying to diagnose this I split my big fat partition into 3, one of
which I formated as ext2. Browsing this one is ok, but the first time I hit
enter "on top" of a fat mount point in mc the sound breaks.

I'm not sure if this is hardware or software as I recall having sound
distortions in windoze too, though I never bothered to investigate, as I use it
very seldom.

I included only some basic info about the box as I'm not sure what might prove
useful.
