IIRC: 2.6.14 worked fine with me. IIRC: vmware player 1.0, like vmware workstation 5.5, does not need to have the vmware-any-any patch applied while vmware GSX server does. IIRC: you need to have the set of kernel headers of your running kernel IIRC: you need to have the same compiler version as your kernel was built with.
