Hence the comment about using sudo: $ sudo aptitude update You could even configure sudo to let you run aptitude without entering a password, though it's not a bad idea to keep that particular safety valve in place. Since you wouldn't be running as root, and you wouldn't configure sudo to let you run apt-get as root from your user account, you'd never have to worry about accidentally running apt-get instead of aptitude. -- Michael A.
