the corrrect way should be:

127.0.0.1       localhost.localdomain   localhost

w.x.y.z         exim.foobar.com exim mailhost mail ...


hostname -s     should only return "mail
hostname -f     should return  mail.foobar.com
hostname -d     should return foobar.com

if not... your dns is broken or /etc/hosts file

some apps seems to care about the order in /etc/hosts of the fqdn vs
the shortnames, while other apps doesn't care
