Hi Aaron, Two possibilities come to mind. If you have a firewall setup that happens to be blocking loopback connections then the GUI will not load. Another one that happened to me had to do with a directory that had the wrong permissions and would only let me log in as root. Have you tried logging into KDE/Gnome as root?
