Most of us manage to tell that from the subscription confirmation message, from the arrival of quite a lot of mail from the list in our mailboxes, and from our ability to send a message to the list when we eventually have something to say. Of course, you could send a test message each day just to check that it still works. In fact, I wonder why we don't all do that...
