Thats properly called a slide rule. I still have one, a K&E
log-log-deci-trig that still works just fine. Does that make me a
little jurassic, and probably old enough to be your grandfather? Yup.
I *made* my first slide rule out of a manila folder, following
directions in a book called "The Fun of Mathematics" (IIRC).
I was about 13 at the time. I made C, D, and AB scales. When my
dad saw what I had done, he took me down, and I picked out a
Pickett aluminum slide rule, which I used until I got into college.
At that time, he bought me an SR52 calculator, which was quite
expensive (like $200 USD at the time, 1970).
I have since misplaced that slide rule during a move :-(
