Hiya! Obviously, I'm somewhat blinded. For some time I try to configure a new desktop machine ('etch', kernel 2.6.12) to automount (gnome-volume-manager) an USB stick. This is not my first Debian system and with other systems (e.g. my laptop), I'm able to use USB sticks, but this machine is awful.
If I insert the USB stick, the kernel says: usb 1-2.2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8 [...] Attached scsi removable disk sdg at scsi7, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 I have no idea why exacly sdg and not sdc (sd[a,b] are my harddisks), but imo that doesn't matter. What matters is the message: hal.dev [5657]: DEVNAME is not set for I cannot find anything useful even using google. I tried to start the 'hald' foreground and verbose but that gives me this messages: linux/osspec.c:1461: Processing event around first hotplug with SEQNUM=1017 linux/osspec.c:1354: action=add seqnum=1017 subsystem=usb sysfs_path=/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb1/1-2/1-2.2 [...] callout.c:318: Invoking /etc/hal/device.d/40-hal-hotplug-map.hal [...] hald.c:81: Added device to GDL; udi=/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/scsi_8_0_0_0 [...] and nothing happens. On my laptop things go on with: linux/osspec.c:1349: action=add seqnum=1009 subsystem=block sysfs_path=/sys/block/sdb linux/osspec.c:1191: dev_file=/dev/sdb is for udi=/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/temp/57 linux/osspec.c:1197: .udev.class_name = block linux/block_class_device.c:1410: Bus type is scsi! [...] linux/block_class_device.c:839: Forcing check for media check on device /dev/sdb and finally: linux/block_class_device.c:2145: /dev/sdb1 is mounted at /mnt/sdb1,major:minor=8:17, fstype=vfat,udi=/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/block_4241-6035 but this damned desktop doesn't do anything like that.
