Oh dear, this is rather embarrassing :-( I really must try and get out more ! Wait for it: all I had to do was hit the refresh button on Firefox ! I noticed that lynx and Konqueror didn't exhibit the "faulty" behaviour. I've now installed apache2 and it really rocks. Sorry to waste your time.
